Michael Curtiz – Director of Casablanca

On researching for my Cinematic module, I found the director of this film was originally an actor in his native Hungary gaining his diploma in 1906, and six years later in 1912 he started to combine acting with directing.

In 1926 he moved to America to work for Warner Bros, after he came to their attention whilst directing silent movies in Vienna.

Casablanca has become one of the all time classic films,  and Curtiz won the Academy Award for best director for this film in 1943.

It has also been interesting to learn that Michael Curtiz also worked with Elvis Presley in 1958 on ‘King Creole’ and was also the director of another classic ‘White Christmas’ with Bing Crosby in 1954 and that a total of over 150 films have been directed by him.Image
